Funniest Golfing Moment:  During our one of many $10 trips playing with Rabbit and Macka. Rabbit was excited that Macka was using a distance finder and arriving on a part 3 hole,Rabbit walks over to the buggy to check the distance. Has a good look at the gadget and at the hole, goes to his bag and changes clubs. After his usual ritual before hitting the ball (listening for every noise five kilometers away, etc) he hits the ball as clean as the pro, but the ball only went half way. In his amazement he just could not understand why his ball did not go very far. He confirms that the distance finder showed a distance of 80 meters to the flag… Macka grabs the gadget to check the distance, and YES it was 80 meters but to the previous hole flag as Rabbit forgot to press the button to go to the next hole.. which was around 155 meters long. We could not stop laughing for the next few holes and Rabbit did not rely on looking at the distance finder again!

RICK’S RULE OF THE MONTH – SEPTEMBER 10 RULE 26 “WATER HAZARDS”

The question ‘where to drop’ has raised its ugly head again in relation to our bunker

on the 15th hole adjoining the lake 150 meters from the green on the right side of the fairway. All water hazards at The Colonial are ‘lateral water hazards’. So your options for a ball that has gone through this bunker and into the lake are as follows :

1. Play a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played. (This could be from the 15th tee ).

2. Drop a ball behind the water hazard (and the bunker in this case) keeping the point  where the ball had entered the lateral water hazard between you and the hole. There is no restriction as to how far you go back on this line. (Usually far enough to get a flat lie or on the fairway).

3. Drop a ball within 2 club lengths of the point where the ball last crossed the margin of the lateral water hazard but no closer to the pin. (In this case that point  would most likely be in the bunker).

4. Drop a ball within 2 club lengths of the point on the opposite side of the lake which is equidistant from the hole. (i.e. on the 17th side of the lake).

With days becoming warmer and nights milder, soil temperatures are on the rise resulting in slightly increased growth throughout all of the golf course and associated gardens.

Application of fertilsers to fairways, greens and tees will aid spring growth and assist in maintaining healthy turf leading into summer. Light dustings of sand on greens will assist in providing a good putting surface.

Some gardens have been replanted and mulched around greens and tees. This work will be ongoing and continue around our usual maintenance schedule.

Many thanks to golfers who utilise the sand buckets provided for use in divot repair. Studies have shown that turf will repair 9 times faster when divots are filled.

We hope that all golfers enjoy their game and the beautiful sunny spring days at The Colonial.

Difficult Year for the Golf Industry

This has been a difficult year for Tourism and for the local golf industry and sadly Palm Meadows, one of our direct competitors, closed their doors after 25 years. By comparison, this year we have again advanced the quality and playability of the golf courses, and shared resources and staff to improve the quality and consistently of service in all areas.

Thanks to our Staff

We are very proud to have survived the GFC without reducing our very loyal and most trustworthy 95 employees who directly inject 4 million dollars into the local economy. That said we have continuously reviewed our costs and prices and compared them to others on the coast to maintain market dominance despite this putting additional pressure on us to achieve cost controls.

Infrastructure, Investment and Improvements :

Fire control communication systems replacment, Cool rooms reticulation replacement Batteries across the fleet of golf carts replaced, Extention our Liquor License hours, Monthly payment schemes for members, Specials/promotional activities on line,

Golf range improved, New turf nursery, Aquatic weed reduction in the lakes, New outdoor furniture,

Business Strategies

  • promoted sponsorship opportunities with our local clubs membership bases
  • We have formed alliances with various industry partners and cooperate in joint marketing activities with Go Golfing, Australasian Golf Academy, Sensational Golf Tours, Radisson Hotel Resort, Royal Pines Resort, Conrad Jupiter’s.
  • We have implemented new software to develop new visitor business externally.
  • We have developed special packages that compliment the brand positioning. Eg our Charity and Executive Golf packages.
  • We have maintained and developed a member base in a declining member market.
  • We have developed new membership packages
  • We are continuing to look for ways to develop our website with online facilities.
  • We have developed our sales collateral for Weddings and we attend trade exhibitions in the Golf and Wedding markets.
  • We are involved with local organisations including, Commerce QLD, Restaurant Caterers, Central Chamber of Commerce, and Robina School, and others.

Finally our staff members are advisors to PGA International Golf institute, The Industry Advisory Board of Tafe, Central Chamber of Commerce Committee Members, Industry advisory council to Bond University and the Gold Coast Sport Task Force.
